Not everyone enjoys the tough maintenance schedule required to keep a marine tank in tip top condition; unfortunately it’s essential but the end results can also be very rewarding.

Tank Maintenance

- Tank Maintenance -

Successful fishkeeping and proper regular maintenance go hand in hand.  Many hobbyists spend hours each week on maintenance procedures well in excess of those realistically required, claiming that much of the pleasure is in the regular upkeep.  Far from being a chore, the caring aquarist regards maintenance as an opportunity to restore and revitalize, making sure that everything is as good as it can be and that the health of all the animals is preserved and extended.

Maintenance is not constant and unnecessary meddling with the tank set-up, as this may prove harmful to the inhabitants.  It is a logical system of regular activities designed to keep the aquarium fully functioning.  Regular water changes with high quality water are fundamental to proper maintenance.  What constitutes a sufficient water change will vary from tank to tank.  The exact proportion of water to be replaced will be influenced by the amount and type of livestock kept.  A heavily stocked fish-only aquarium will need larger, and probably more frequent, water changes than an invertebrate system with just a few fish.
