Light falls within a broad spectrum of wavelengths with each wavelength representing a particular colour. Natural Sunlight contains all of these wavelengths but they do not penetrate water at equal rates. Reds and oranges have little penetration, yellow and penetrate a little further, with only blue light capable of exceeding depths freater than 15-20 feet.
Most tanks are, of course, very shallow compared to the sea and none of the wavelengths are filtered out to any noticeable degree. Carefully employed, and at correct intensity, these colours can be used merely to enhance the appearance of fish, or they may be absolutely essential to the well-being of light-loving corals.
