Also known as Scorpionfish, Turkyfish, Zebrafish, Dragonfish and fu Manchu the Lionfish’s appearance is unmistakable! The rays of the pectoral and dorsal fins are grossly extended and, in many species embellished with decorative tissue.
An extremely efficient predator with a range of defences to deter potential larger enemies; its extended fin rays, although look like beautiful decorations are actually filled with potent venom capable of inflicting a painful wound on humans and fatal injury to other fish. Although there are no reliable external differences between ,ale and female, aquarium observations have revealed that female lionfish release a gelatinous ball of eggs while a mating pair rise together in the water column.
