About Clownfish

Premnas biaculeatus

- Maroon clownfish -

With recent publicity through films such as ‘Finding Nemo’ the common clownfish is the most popular marine fish in kept captivity today.  In total there are 26 species of clownfish, half of which are available within the aquatic trade due to either protection through legislation or inaccessible to collectors.  Although not described as a hardy fish most species will respond well to a reasonable amount of care and moderate tank conditions, never growing more than 2 inches in an aquarium.

All species of the clownfish can form a symbolic relationship with an anemone.  In this relationship both partners draw advantage from living in close association but are not fully reliant on each other.  The anemone will provide a safe home for the clownfish, which in return protects the anemone from potential predators due to its highly territorial nature (it is worth noting that both clownfish and anemone can survive happily and healthily without one another).
